Bruckner Expressway/I-95 Interchange
DESCRIPTION: This project, at the time, was the largest NYSDOT contract awarded on record. This megaproject required the complete removal of the original concrete decks and safety walks while coinciding with extensive steel rehabilitation by widening the superstructure with new steel stringers and bearings. Elaborate temporary structures were built to maintain traffic during this colossal multi-stage structural rehabilitation. Creativity, teamwork and partnering with the owner brought this massive project through difficult challenges and produced an early completion entitling DeFoe to $8 Million of incentive bonuses.
SCOPE: This major NYSDOT project required the complete demolition of the concrete decks with meticulous shielding requirements to contain debris and protect the safety of all parties. New elastomeric bearings and steel girders were installed using large jacking towers and temporary structures. New pile foundations, abutments and piers were built to accommodate the widened roadway sections. New cast-in-place concrete decks and concrete barriers completed the superstructure, while concrete and asphalt paving replaced the existing mainline roadway. New lighting systems, signage and drainage were installed throughout the job limits to enhance safety. Traffic was maintained on the heavily congested Cross Bronx Expressway .
NOTEWORTHY: The $242 Million project was completed on time and portions of the project were delivered ahead of schedule which entitled DeFoe to $8 Million of incentive bonuses.
