Fordham Road Bridge Metro North/I-87 – Bronx, NY
The complete reconstruction of the West Fordham Road Bridge over the Major Deegan Expressway (I-87) and Metro North Railroad using new structural steel and cast-in-place concrete decks. The Metro North station platform was extended and a new ADA elevator providing access to the platform was installed. The street ramp was widened to accommodate better truck access to the RR service road.
This project included the complete demolition of the existing bridge’s structural steel and concrete deck without impacting traffic on the Major Deegan or the active tracks below. New pile foundations, abutments, piers and retaining walls were constructed. Multiple shifts were used to erect all structural steel during the overnight hours. Cast-in-place concrete decks with concrete barriers completed the roadway. Adjacent pavement and approach slabs were replaced and new electrical systems, signage and guardrails were installed and the commuter platform was extended for the safety of riders.
The project was completed ahead of schedule.
