of the Kosciusko Bridge – Brooklyn, NY
This project required the rehabilitation of the concrete substructure and concrete filled steel grate roadway deck. The concrete columns were chipped to sound concrete and a new concrete jacket was added. The elevation and thickness of the columns and pier caps made the formwork and concrete placement very challenging.
On the roadway surface, unsound concrete was removed from the concrete filled steel grating and replaced with patch material, followed by the application of a thin overlay of concrete with a methyl methacrylate. This was the first use of its kind using this new material, so DeFoe devised its own application procedures for a safe and efficient result. Teamwork and many innovative ideas made this job a success for DeFoe as well as the owner.
This project required the complete removal and replacement of unsound concrete on the substructure with a jacket of 8 inches of new concrete. Also, performed was the removal and replacement of unsound concrete on the roadway deck and concrete approaches. The entire roadway surface was overlaid with 3/8” thick methyl methacrylate material.
