Whitestone Expressway – Queens, NY
This complex, fast-tracked project called for the rehabilitation of the Whitestone Expressway from Linden Place to the Grand Central Parkway. To enhance efficiency the project was divided into three major contracts. The results were an early completion of each phase of work, as well as an early completion of the overall project.
The multi-phased construction approach using short-term detours allowed the crews to complete all tasks ahead of schedule. The staging sequence developed required year-round and all season work with no down time. The work started with the total demolition of the existing concrete deck and completed with new pile foundations, abutments and piers. Large steel plate girders and stringers were fabricated and erected over Flushing Bay utilizing special barge mounted cranes. Cast-in-place concrete decks and barriers completed the reconstructed roadway. The existing pavement on the approach slabs was replaced and electrical upgrades were performed in conjunction with new signage, guard rails and the painting of new steel to finish ahead of schedule.
All three contracts were completed ahead of schedule
