NYS Thruway I-87 / I-287 Interchange – Suffern, NY
This project required the entire reconstruction and realignment of the I-87 / I-287 Interchange. 9 new bridges were constructed and local roads realigned to inter-connect with the new bridges and ramps.
This project headlined with the demolition of the existing steel and concrete deck bridges that spanned over the NYS Thruway. Extensive earth removal and large rock cuts were performed to make way for new pile foundations, abutments and piers. New concrete and asphalt paving was placed throughout the mainline, while new signage and an improved guard rail system was installed to go with the refined landscaping.
The extensive use of curved steel girders made the fabrication and erection of these elements over the Thruway and NJ Transit’s active railroad tracks a challenge. Complex staging and multi-shift operations were required to maintain the high volumes of vehicular traffic and railroad operations.
