Riverside Drive South – Manhattan, NY
This bridge removal and replacement at 72nd street and the Riverside Drive was performed to accommodate automobile access to the private new development along the Miller Highway between 61st and 72nd Streets. This complex staged construction was performed within a very confined site, which included crossing over two active Amtrak Railroad tracks that had to remain in service throughout the project as well as providing temporary support to maintain the entrance ramp to Riverside Drive from 72nd Street.
This project included temporary and permanent substructure construction including rock anchors, mini caissons and pile foundations adjacent to the active railroad tracks. Large cast-in-place pier foundations and abutments were constructed to support new curved structural steel elements and a NYCDEP water main. To maintain traffic, an extensive temporary deck support system was constructed using 24” caissons, large pipe towers and large section steel carrier beams. DeFoe Corp. used precision construction methods to be courteous to New Yorkers.
