Taxiway A Bridge, JFK International Airport (Airside)
Queens, NY
>
DESCRIPTION:
The arrival of a new generation of large aircrafts at JFK International Airport meant the 2 existing taxiway bridges, spanning over 6 lanes of vehicular traffic of the Van Wyck Expressway, required strengthening to support the heavier loads.

SCOPE:
This project required the complete removal and replacement of the bridge superstructure. Specialized superstructure concrete mixes were employed including large aggregates and low water/cement ratios for superior strength. The cast-in-place concrete taxiway deck was 12” thick with special antiskid surface milling required.

Traffic was maintained on the Expressway at all times. Furthermore, constant coordination with the Port Authority was maintained regarding movement and deployment of construction equipment on the active airfield and in close proximity to operational aircrafts.
